Macromedia Site of the Day 21/7/2005

“thisisperfect is a new concept that finally makes it affordable to own absolutely unique art that will match your home or work space perfectly – because you create it!

Once you have chosen the piece of art you like best, thisisperfect gives you the opportunity to choose the colour combinations that you want. Your choices may come from a wall colour, your furniture, a vase or maybe just colours that you love!

With thisisperfect, you can see the results of your choices instantly. If you like it, buy it. If you don't, change it... and then change it again... and again and again until it's PERFECT!”

The creator of This is Perfect contacted us with the idea for the site. We discussed it at length, exploring all the eventualities the site would have to cover; how the user chooses artwork, how they change the colours, the format etc. We decided that the best technology to use was Flash because it is widely and freely available, allows compact file sizes (the index swf that drives the site is 76K) and is sophisticated and robust enough to handle the demands that would be placed upon it.

Because it would be essential for any user to have Flash installed we decided to build the entire site in one seamless Flash file rather than cobbling the elements together in a set of ASP pages.

The Flash front end was built using Actionscript 2 classes and communicates with a SQL Server database using XML and minimal ASP. The artwork for the back end fulfilment is generated using Javascript for Photoshop and Illustrator. This allows the printer to download created batch files created by the web server which can be run locally to generate high resolution images, and therefore minimise data transfer.

Phase one of the project – the user front end – was completed in eight weeks, with phase two – administration and fulfilment – completed in four. Development is on-going
