Intranets & Extranets
A website doesn’t have to be publicly accessible.
- Intranets are mini-internets running on internal company networks, hosting private web sites.
- Extranets exist on the World Wide Web, but are password protected to prevent public access.
Many of the same rules of web design apply when building intranets and extranets. However, your user-base may be more of known quantity, than is normally the case with a publicly accessible site. For example if you know that everyone in your organization has Internet Explorer 6.0 and Flash Player 8, you have the freedom to include useful features on your intranet, which would not be possible on the normal websites.
Intranets and Extranets can be used for a wide variety of functions. In combination with a database, they could provide an accounting system, a customer relations management tool, or employees’ database. You could also include instant messaging, a company forum, and a whole host of downloadable tools.
